Archive update: this older travel-insurance article referred to surveys, an EHIC-only era and policy practices that should not be treated as current. It has been shortened to general questions and current independent sources. IM-Insured does not offer an active travel-insurance quote journey on this page.

Consider the risks of your actual trip

If you seek cover through an authorised travel-insurance provider, check the destinations, dates, activities, medical needs and cost of a disruption. Policies differ in what they cover for cancellation, emergency treatment, repatriation, belongings and delays. Read the terms and exclusions rather than assuming a situation will be covered.

Health cards are not a full substitute

A valid GHIC or EHIC may help with state-provided medically necessary healthcare in eligible places, but it does not replace travel insurance or cover every cost. The UK government’s foreign-travel insurance guidance explains the distinction and points to current country advice.

Tell the provider what it asks

Give complete and accurate answers about medical conditions, planned activities and other information requested. Ask the insurer or broker how a condition or activity is treated and how to make a claim. Do not rely on the original article’s old assertion that particular conditions or family events will be covered.

For present-day independent guidance, see MoneyHelper’s travel-insurance guide. IM-Insured’s currently described protection and private medical routes are on the homepage.
