This article was originally published when particular insurers announced changes to their overseas-resident criteria. Insurer appetite, territories, policy terms and IM-Insured service arrangements can change. The old provider list and price claims are not a statement of current availability.

Cover for residents outside mainland UK

Living in the Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey or Gibraltar may affect which providers can consider an application and what information they need. Eligibility is not guaranteed by residence alone. Providers may also consider where you work, travel, pay tax and expect to live during the policy term, alongside health and other underwriting details.

Do not assume that a policy available to a mainland UK resident will have the same availability, premium, terms or claims arrangements in another jurisdiction. Check the proposed policy documents and territorial conditions carefully before applying.

What to ask before arranging protection

  • Does the insurer accept residents of your jurisdiction at the time of application?
  • Will the policy remain appropriate if you move or work across borders?
  • What are the cover amount, term, exclusions and claims conditions?
  • Are there any tax or legal implications that require local professional advice?

For an overview of the questions to consider, read our Expat Life Insurance guide. To discuss your circumstances, use the Contact page. An enquiry is not an instant quote or a promise that a named insurer will offer cover, that we can access every provider, or that a particular premium will be available.
