This article discusses travel-insurance pricing reported in 2017. The figures and market observations below are historical, not current quotes or evidence of today’s insurer availability.
Travel insurance can become more expensive or harder to compare as a traveller gets older or has a pre-existing medical condition. The price and terms offered depend on the traveller, trip, medical information, cover selected and each provider’s underwriting rules.
What was reported in 2017
A 2017 newspaper report compared example prices for an older traveller and questioned whether some customers were paying more than necessary. Those examples were a snapshot from that time. They should not be used to estimate what a policy costs now, or to conclude that insurers generally overcharge older customers.
How to compare cover now
Check the cover you need for your destination and activities, including medical expenses, cancellation, excesses and any exclusions. Give complete and accurate information about relevant medical conditions. Compare the full policy terms as well as the premium; a cheaper policy may provide different protection.
If a comparison service cannot show suitable options, you may wish to ask a specialist travel-insurance broker about providers that can consider your circumstances. Availability and price cannot be guaranteed. Do not cancel an existing policy before checking the replacement cover and its start date.
This is general information, not a current travel-insurance quote or an offer of cover from IM-Insured.
