Couples can consider a joint life policy or separate policies. Neither structure is automatically better or cheaper for everyone. The right choice depends on who needs protection, the cover amounts, the policy terms and affordability.

1. What happens after a claim?

Many joint policies are set up to pay after the first valid death claim and then end. With two separate policies, a valid claim on one does not normally end the other. Check the exact arrangement, including any Critical Illness benefit, rather than assuming two payouts are guaranteed.

2. Compare the full cost and cover

Request current illustrations for comparable cover amounts and terms. The price difference between one joint plan and two individual plans is not a fixed percentage; age, health, cover features and insurer assessment all matter.

3. Consider future changes

Separate policies can be simpler to retain if partners later separate, but ownership, beneficiaries and trust arrangements still need review. A joint policy may have different options; read the terms before changing or cancelling existing cover.
