What is Expat Life Insurance?
Expat life cover is life insurance considered for someone living outside the UK. Availability depends on the insurer, country of residence and the applicant’s circumstances. Some arrangements require a financial connection to the UK, such as dependants or a mortgage.
Who is it for?
People living abroad or planning a move who want to consider financial protection for their loved ones. Start by reviewing any cover you already have and the commitments that would remain after your death.
Connect where you live with what you need to protect
Moving country can change eligibility and administration, while financial commitments may remain in more than one place.
Current residence
Tell the adviser where you live now and where you expect to be during the policy term.
People and obligations
Map dependants, housing costs and other commitments that would remain after your death.
Policy fit
Check insurer eligibility, underwriting, currency and who would receive a valid claim.
A UK connection may matter for some insurers. Existing cover and new cover should each be checked on their own terms.
Understand your options
Arranging new cover
Tell the adviser where you live, your travel plans and what you want to protect. The insurer may apply residency, banking, underwriting or geographical requirements.
Keeping existing cover
Moving abroad does not automatically make a UK life policy invalid. Ask your insurer how your particular policy is affected, including any additional illness benefits and premium-payment requirements.
Why might you need it?
If someone depends on you financially, or a mortgage or other commitment would remain after your death, life cover may provide money to support them if a valid claim is paid. Depending on eligibility, life cover may be arranged for a fixed term, for ongoing protection or to provide an income benefit. The options available while living abroad depend on your residence, circumstances and the insurer’s criteria.
Before you decide
- Give accurate information about residence, travel, occupation and health.
- Check exclusions and whether all policy benefits apply overseas.
- Understand the amount, term, currency and payment arrangements.
- Do not cancel existing protection before understanding any replacement cover.
